Russian tourists run for their lives
    amid Crimea attack
Shocking footage has emerged of the moment a beach in Crimea was turned into a hellscape as terrified sunbathers fled the shore to escape falling shrapnel from a downed Ukrainian missile this weekend

Blasts rang out in sunny Sevastopol and on Uchkuevka beach on Sunday, prompting a desperate mass evacuation as parents scooped up children playing in the sand and sprinted for cover. Other clips later showed how injured holidaymakers were carted away from the scene on sunloungers.

At least four people including two children were killed and 153 people were injured in the incident on Sunday, according to Russian reports

Moscow this week squarely blamed Washington, claiming the explosions were caused by US-supplied ATACMS missiles tipped with cluster munitions that were shot down by air defences.

Russian officials said that the missiles were supplied to Kyiv, aimed and guided by the US military, vowing retaliation.

The US meanwhile acknowledged it had provided Ukraine with weapons to 'defend its sovereign territory, including Crimea', but Pentagon spokesperson Major Charlie Dietz insisted that 'Ukraine makes its own targeting decisions and conducts its own military operations'.

The exact weapons involved in the incident have not yet been verified, and it is not clear whether cluster munitions or just falling shrapnel were responsible for the explosions.

Sevastopol, a Black Sea port city and traditional headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet even when it was under Ukrainian rule, was annexed by Russia in 2014.

It regularly comes under fire from Ukraine, with Mykhailo Podolyak - a top aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky - describing the territory as 'a large military camp' containing 'hundreds of direct military targets, which the Russians are cynically trying to hide and cover up with their own civilians'.

The video opens with a typical beach scene, with people paddling in the shallow water or lounging on the sand. However, the mood quickly shifts, and beach goers are seen running back up the sand away from the water.

It quickly become clear why. Dozens of explosions erupt from the sea, sending plumes of water and smoke into the sky.

A split second later, similar explosions hit the beach, prompting further panic.

There were reports of a lack of air raid alerts ahead of the incident which saw fragments pelt the seaside in Sevastopol, while security camera footage from a nearby cafe showed how customers dove for cover as explosions rang out around them.

Moscow summoned US ambassador Lynne Tracy to the foreign ministry to issue a formal warning following the incident, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov yesterday gave a public statement slamming the US for the 'barbaric' strike on Sevastopol

'The involvement of the United States, the direct involvement, as a result of which Russian civilians are killed, cannot be without consequences,' said Peskov.

'Time will tell what these will be.

'You should ask my colleagues in Europe, and above all in Washington, the press secretaries, why their governments are killing Russian children. Just ask them this question,' the spokesman for Vladimir Putin said.

Today, Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov chimed in, declaring that 'the reaction from Washington, the reaction to these atrocities from the European Union shows that they do not disdain any methods, including methods of terror, for their illusory attempts to inflict a strategic defeat on the Russian Federation in every sense'.

Meanwhile, Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder expressed concern over the reports of civilian casualties, but said the US did not bear responsibility for any civilian deaths.

'I would ultimately refer you to the Ukrainian side to talk about their operations. As you know, they make their own decisions regarding operations and selection of targets.

'We made it very clear that we do not want civilians to die,' Ryder said, but added: 'If (the Russians) are concerned about the losses of their troops, they should immediately stop this war and return the sovereign territory of Ukraine.'

Two children are believed to have been killed at the beach in Crimea, along with an elderly woman, who was swimming in the sea at the time of the impact.

Wounded tourists were attended to by passers-by on a beach in Sevastopol after the incident on Sunday

Kyiv's forces have relied heavily on Western-supplied weaponry since Russia's invasion more than three years ago.

The military aid has been crucial in allowing Ukraine to hold the Kremlin's army at bay, with few major changes along the 620-mile front line in eastern and southern Ukraine for many months.

Some Western countries have hesitated over providing more - and more sophisticated - help for Kyiv's army because of concerns about potentially provoking the Kremlin.

But as Ukraine has at times struggled to hold the line against Russia's bigger and better-equipped military, Western leaders have gradually relented and granted more support.

Since the outset of the war, the US had maintained a policy of not allowing Ukraine to use the weapons it provided to hit targets on Russian soil for fear of further escalating the conflict.

But the Pentagon said last week that Ukraine's military is being allowed to use longer-range missiles provided by the US to strike targets inside Russia if it is acting in self-defence.

And Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014 in a move that most of the world rejected as unlawful, had long been seen as a fair target for Ukraine by its Western allies.

Incorrect, Russia did NOT annex the Crimean from Ukraine in 2014

Following the US backed ILLEGAL COUP The Crimea held a legal election as the whether or not they would recognize the illegal Ukrainian government, obviously they chose not to support the illegal government.

Putin, Orban discuss Ukraine

As Hungary assumes the presidency of the European bloc, Viktor Orban leads a peace mission between Ukraine and Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with his Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in a meeting that angered other European Union member states and the Ukrainian government on Friday.

The two leaders discussed various issues, however, headlining the talks is the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Generally, the EU has boycotted Russian government officials and on this occasion said that Orban threatened to undermine the 27-member bloc's stance on the conflict.

On his part, the Russian President emphasized the positive nature of the talks, saying he hopes that the two parties will have "the opportunity to exchange views on bilateral relations in this difficult situation."

Putin also said that he looks forward to "talk about the prospects of the largest European crisis, I mean in the Ukrainian direction."

"I am ready to discuss [a peaceful settlement to the conflict] with you and explain some of the nuances. I hope you will also introduce me to your position and that of your European partners," Putin was quoted as saying.

Orban's talks with Putin: A rare European occurrence

On the other hand, Orban said he recognizes that "positions are far apart" between the two sides, adding that "the number of steps needed to end the war and bring about peace are many."

The Hungarian leader pointed to a decreasing number of entities that can discuss the situation in Ukraine with both sides of the country.

Hungary will become the only country in Europe able to talk to everyone
Orban also said he would discuss a number of other important European issues with Putin.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russian officials only knew about the meeting on Wednesday, adding that it was Orban's idea.

According to Peskov, there will be at least two rounds of talks, one in which delegations will discuss bilateral issues and another meeting between the heads of the two states that will last "as long as necessary."

Hungary's Prime Minister arrived in Moscow after visiting Kiev on July 2, in the context of a "peace mission" he is leading.

The meeting comes a few days after Hungary took over the EU's rotating presidency, agitating top EU and NATO officials, such as Ursula von der Leyen, Josep Borrell, and Jens Stoltenberg.

Hungary will hold a six-month presidency of the EU, in which it will garner sway over the European bloc's agenda and priorities.

The Hungarian leader on Friday insisted that peace cannot be achieved without dialogue.

"If we just sit in Brussels, we won't be able to get any closer to peace. Action must be taken," Orban said during his regular radio interview.

The visit also marks the first to Moscow by a European leader since a trip by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer in April 2022.

Putin urges complete end
    of Ukraine conflict
President Vladimir Putin stated, during a joint press conference following a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Moscow on Friday, that Russia aims to achieve a comprehensive resolution to the Ukraine conflict, rather than merely agreeing to a ceasefire or maintaining a freeze on hostilities

Elsewhere in his remarks, Putin emphasized that Russia opposes a ceasefire or temporary pause that Kiev could exploit to recover losses, regroup, and rearm.

He stressed Russia's preference for a total and definitive resolution to the conflict.

Putin mentioned that the conflict's resolution hinges on several conditions being fulfilled. Specifically, he underscored that Kiev must withdraw its forces from Donbass, as well as from the former Ukrainian regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, which Russia officially integrated after public referendums.

The Russian president stated that there are additional conditions to be addressed, noting that these would require thorough discussion during potential collaborative efforts.

On his account, Orban observed that Moscow and Kiev hold divergent positions on the conflict and emphasized that considerable effort will be needed to achieve a resolution.

Putin indicated that based on the Ukrainian authorities' stance and the current situation, it appears clear that Kiev "is still not ready to give up waging war to a victorious end.”

Ukraine settlement option

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated, at a meeting of the Council of heads of SCO member states in Astana onThursday, that Russia's proposed solution to the war in Ukraine could swiftly halt hostilities and initiate negotiations, contingent on Kiev and its Western supporters being prepared.

"Let me remind you that in mid-June we presented another settlement option, which, if the Ukrainian side, and most importantly, its Western sponsors, were ready to accept it, would allow literally at once, immediately cease hostilities, save human lives, and start negotiations," Putin stressed.

At the time, he also expressed gratitude to SCO members for their suggestions regarding the resolution of the Ukraine conflict and affirmed Moscow's readiness to consider them.

Previously, Putin suggested an immediate ceasefire with the condition that Ukraine accepts certain terms, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from all territories now under Russian control and legally binding assurances that Kiev would not pursue NATO membership.

Despite Kiev and its Western supporters rejecting the proposal, Putin reiterated that the offer remains open. It is also worth noting that the Kremlin has urged Ukrainian leaders to carefully consider the offer.

War crimes against Russian POWs

A German combat medic testifies that fighters in his Western mercenary unit fighting for Ukraine are committing war crimes against Russian POWs

Members of the Chosen Company, an international mercenary group fighting on behalf of Ukraine, are committing war crimes against Russian soldiers, a battlefield doctor and former soldier who served as a medic for the unit said, according to a report by the New York Times.

Caspar Grosse, a German medic, reported that in one instance in August 2023, a severely injured, unarmed Russian soldier, initially presumed dead, was crawling through a trench and pleading for help in English.

Despite his apparent surrender, he was shot in the chest by a member of the Chosen Company. When the soldier continued to move and breathe, another fighter shot him in the head, which Grosse assumed was a mercy killing.

Another incident involved a Greek soldier known as Zeus, who threw a grenade at two Russian soldiers. One soldier was severely injured and immobile, while the other attempted to surrender with his hands up.

Both soldiers were killed by the grenade explosion, as confirmed by helmet camera footage reviewed by the New York Times, with Grosse also adding to the culpability of the soldiers by underlining that a Ukrainian drone team verified that the soldier was trying to surrender.

Bound POW executed

Another incident reported on by the German medic saw a member of the unit informing him they had captured prisoners of war, with the aforementioned Zeus executing a POW, who was bound, by shooting him several times in the back of the head. He was defended as "just doing his job."

After learning of the events, Grosse attempted to report them to the Chosen Company's commander, but former US Army National Guardsman Ryan O'Leary dismissed that his unit did anything wrong despite, whom he called his "brothers" violating the Geneva Conventions of 1949, which dictate that wounded or captured members of any armed forces should be treated humanely.

Russian POWs tortured

This is not the first time that the Ukrainian side and its allies have been accused of committing war crimes, with the last report of such actions being in March, wherein the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reported that Russian prisoners of war were tortured in Ukraine between December 2023 and February 2024.

Between December 2023 and February 2024, OHCHR staff visited 44 Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Lviv, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Vinnytsia, and Zaporizhia areas.

According to the report, the OHCHR stated that the POW "provided credible accounts of torture or ill-treatment in transit places after their immediate evacuation from the battlefield."

The OHCHR stated that Ukrainian authorities do not properly punish those guilty of torture and brutality against civilians and prisoners of war.

The report, although unrelated, came not too long after the Ukrainian armed forces executed in a video that was circulated on social media last year a Russian prisoner of war, with further reports suggesting that a second was executed off camera.

The report detailed that the OHCHR documented arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and the use of torture and ill-treatment, including sexual violence, by Ukrainian authorities during the detention of conflict-related civilian detainees and Russian POWs, as well as the summary execution of at least 25 Russian servicemen hors de combat (all in 2022 and early 2023)."

Furthermore, the report indicates that "Ukrainian authorities have launched at least five criminal investigations into allegations of violations committed by their own security forces, involving 22 victims," which the OHCHR believes indicates there has been little progress in the investigation and punishment of such abuses.

How Ukraine Tortured and Slaughtered Donbass

Almost immediately after the proxy war erupted, footage of the torture and murder of Russians in Ukrainian custody emerged

On July 6th, the New York Times published an astonishing investigation: In Ukraine, Killings of Surrendering Russians Divide an American-Led Unit. The article documents in grim detail how Chosen Company, an international volunteer battalion for Kiev, routinely executes Russian prisoners of war. It is the very first mainstream admission that this practice - a brazen breach of the Geneva Conventions, and a grave war crime - is widespread among Ukraine’s fighters, both foreign and homegrown.

Almost immediately after the proxy war erupted, footage of the torture and murder of Russians in Ukrainian custody - unarmed, injured, surrendering and/or bound - began circulating on social networks and Telegram channels. However, save for a single incident in April 2022, when Georgian Legion fighters gleefully filmed themselves surveying a scene near Bucha, where they ambushed and killed multiple fleeing VDV soldiers, Western journalists have either ignored these abuses, or outright denied Kiev endorses or engages in such activity.

Georgian Legion chief Mamuka Mamulashvili has nonetheless justified this conduct, openly boasting that his soldiers “tie [POWs’] hands and feet sometimes” before killing them, and “not a single [Russian] will be taken prisoner.”
The New York Times probe strongly suggests this strategy is not confined to the Legion. Multiple Chosen Company fighters testified to witnessing sadistic executions of POWs, and their fellow soldiers proudly bragging about carrying them out.

A US veteran posted to the unit claimed they were flatly told by their recruiter: “[It] was OK to kill POWs if they didn’t surrender in the strictest Geneva Convention standards.”

It may be the case that the New York Times revelations are a means of distancing Kiev’s Western backers from the actions of Ukraine’s forces. Yet, as we shall see, the proxy war’s leading sponsors had strong grounds to know precisely the nature of the government, military, and security services they were arming, funding and training long before Russia’s February 2022 invasion.

‘Intentional Strategy’

As an Al Mayadeen investigation of July 2nd made clear, Ukraine’s eight-year-long “anti-terror operation” in Donbass was a savage assault on largely defenceless residents of the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

The grim reality of Kiev’s abuses throughout this time was largely shielded from Western public view. Occasionally though, damaging disclosures did emerge. In 2014, Amnesty International publicised horrendous crimes committed by fascist paramilitary group Aidar Battalion in Donbass.

The next year, the organisation reported on “overwhelming evidence” of fighters and civilians taken prisoner by the Ukrainian military and security services being tortured and killed.

It branded the activities of Right Sector, an ultranationalist militia at the forefront of the Maidan coup, “especially disturbing”. The group had transformed an abandoned youth camp into “an ad hoc prison,” holding dozens of civilians there as hostages, “brutally torturing them and extorting large amounts of money from them and their families.”

These revelations received meagre mainstream attention, then were promptly ignored. But the abuses continued apace. As a grisly 2016 report submitted to the OSCE starkly concluded:
“Torture and inhumane treatment inflicted by the Security Forces of Ukraine (SBU), Ukrainian armed forces, National Guard and other formations within the Interior Ministry of Ukraine, as well as by illegal armed groups, such as Right Sector, have not only continued but are gaining in scale and are becoming systematic…the extent to which torture is being used and the fact that this is done systematically prove that torture is an intentional strategy of the said institutions, authorized by their leadership.”
The report contains a panoply of deeply disturbing, and frequently difficult-to-read, first-hand testimonies of torture by the SBU and its fascist paramilitary confederates.

Many of the victims claimed to be innocent civilians violently snatched off the street by gangs of armed thugs, often associated with the Neo-Nazi Azov Battalion and Right Sector, while going about their daily business. Once in Kiev’s custody, they admitted separatist supporters and fighters were subjected to hideous abuse almost without pause.

Most prisoners were “electrocuted, beaten cruelly and for multiple days in a row with different objects.” This included “iron bars, baseball bats, sticks, rifle-butts, bayonet knives, rubber batons.” “An absolute majority” reported being subject to mock firing squads, and suffered “death and rape threats to their families.”

Waterboarding, strangulation, and suffocation were common. Other methods included “bone-crashing, stabbing and cutting…branding with red-hot objects, shooting different body parts with small arms.” Captured women were “frequently raped”.

All along, detainees were kept for extended periods in “freezing temperatures, with no access to food or medical assistance.” Some inmates were reportedly killed by being made to march across minefields, and run over with military vehicles.

Others were “forced to take psychotropic substances,” causing them “agony.” Several reported being handcuffed to “hex bars” - weightlifting devices - and hung from ceilings. One victim of that technique reported: “I thought my bones would fall out. My hands still won’t listen to me, here and here.”

‘Risk of Retribution’

The purpose of this, on top of brutalising rebel forces and instilling fear into the civilian population of Donbass, was to secure false testimonies from prisoners. Typically, they were forced to admit to being part of the DPR and LPR defence forces, and committing grave crimes in that capacity. Others signed declarations implicating themselves as Russian assets, and/or validating the fiction that the rebels were controlled and armed by Moscow.

This of course served to reinforce Kiev’s claims its “anti-terror operation” was a righteous, legitimate crusade against Russian invaders in disguise, who were committing perverse acts of “terrorism”. And moreover, that Ukraine was successful in crushing this criminal incursion by their hostile, belligerent adversary. Nonetheless, there was another malign purpose to detaining and abusing so many innocent civilians. They could be traded for Ukrainian soldiers captured by breakaway authorities.

In June 2020, in a case brought by two Ukrainian draft dodgers seeking asylum in London, a British immigration court ruled that Kiev’s frontline forces in the “anti-terror operation” routinely committed grave war crimes.

This included “unlawful capture and detention” of a “large number of civilians “with no legal or military justification…motivated by the need for ‘currency’ for prisoner exchanges” with the breakaway republics. The judgment moreover noted “systemic mistreatment of those detained by the Ukrainian military”:

“This involves torture and other conduct that is cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment contrary to Article 3 of the [European Convention on Human Rights] …There is likely to be official indifference to the mistreatment they have received. There is an attitude and atmosphere of impunity for those involved in mistreating detainees.

No one has been brought to justice. Pro-Kyiv militia have been rewarded for their work by formal incorporation into the military. Lawyers are afraid of taking on cases due to the risk of retribution.”

Elsewhere, the ruling recorded that Kiev’s “adherence to the principles of distinction, precaution and proportionality when engaging with civilian targets has been poor, despite that being a task which calls for surgical precision.” This included infrastructure such as water installations, “a particular and repeated target” despite enjoying “protected status” under international humanitarian law.

It further observed a “widespread civilian loss of life and the extensive destruction of residential property” in Donbass, partially attributable to “poorly targeted and disproportionate attacks carried out by the Ukrainian military.”

We can only speculate whether Kiev was tutored in torture by Western experts in the art.

A February New York Times investigation revealed the very first act of Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, appointed SBU chief immediately following the Maidan coup, was to telephone the local heads of CIA and MI6, asking “for help in rebuilding the agency from the ground up, and [proposing] a three-way partnership.” This dark handshake gave rise to Ukraine’s assassination program, which US officials fear could lead to targeted killings the world over.

Kiev F-16 hopes stifled

As Ukraine is preparing to receive the F-16 fighter jets it has desperately been awaiting to counter Russia's battlefield gains, the drive to send the jets at this week's NATO summit in Washington is being hampered by delays, doubts about spare parts, and a language barrier between Ukrainian pilots and their foreign trainers

Bloomberg cited familiar sources divulging that planners are also concerned that the nation does not have enough runways, and those it does have are susceptible to Russian strikes.

According to one source, Ukraine may be able to operate a squadron of F-16s, ranging from 15 to 24 planes, well short of the 300 fighters that its leaders have requested. Another source told Bloomberg that Ukraine expects six F-16s this summer and up to 20 by the end of 2024.

The problems have been so severe that some have questioned the appropriateness of deploying the planes to Ukraine, and whether doing so now constitutes an expensive show of support for President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the months after pilots began training, including 12 in the United States, the battlefield has altered, with both sides relying on low-cost drones and Russia strengthening its air defenses.

One senior NATO official identified three major challenges on the planners' minds.

First, the planes must be changed according to their mission, such as reconnaissance or warfare.

Second, Ukraine lacks the necessary lengthy, high-quality runways and shelters to shield the F-16s against Russian attacks.

Third, the logistics of sustaining the planes are complicated, ranging from the need for replacement parts to maintenance requirements and locating engineers. Another NATO source stated that Ukraine is attempting to do in a few months what typically takes three to four years.

Airfields 'nice, juicy targets'

Jim Townsend, a senior scholar at the Center for a New American Security, divulged that people "shouldn't expect miracles" from the jets, adding that the airfields will be "nice, juicy targets" for Russia since it has already been hitting some of them.

A spokesman for Lockheed Martin Corp., the manufacturer of the F-16, stated that it supports the US response to the war without elaborating on how servicing or components for the planes will be handled.

At the NATO Public Forum on Wednesday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the transfer of F-16 fighter jets from Europe to Ukraine is now underway.

Zelensky urged NATO leaders to lift all limits on allowing Kiev to strike inside Russia with Western weapons.

"If we want to win, if we want to prevail, if we want to save our country and to defend it, we need to lift all the limitations," Zelensky pleaded.

Simona Soare, senior lecturer at Lancaster University, told Bloomberg that the Russian offensive has convinced some allies that they must listen to Ukraine's demands.

Breedlove also emphasized the training required to break years of habit for Ukrainian pilots, who are used to Soviet-era MiGs with significantly simpler technology. A Ukrainian official acquainted with the issue downplayed the language barrier problem while admitting that there had been delays in training, staff, and maintenance, as well as the inability to provide shelter from Russian attacks.

Serge Stroobants, founder of Brussels-based BANTS Consulting, stated that it is "more a burden than a blessing, with minimal impact before many, many months and great chances of losing many planes and pilots," adding that the jet is not just a plane but rather "a team of nearly 200 people who all play a role in getting the plane off the ground.”

In August last year, Politico reported that Western efforts to train Ukrainian pilots to fly advanced F-16 jets are being hampered by the service members’ poor English language skills.

According to sources, of Ukraine's 32 pilots, only 8 had enough English proficiency to partake in a future training program =))

Trump's VP choice JD Vance

According to a Politico report, Europe is increasingly anxious about the potential implications of a second Donald Trump presidency, particularly with the recent announcement that he has selected Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate for the 2024 election

Vance, known for his isolationist stance, has been a vocal critic of US financial support for Ukraine, which he argues places an undue burden on American taxpayers. The 39-year-old senator played a central role in the recent attempt to block additional Ukraine aid in the Senate and vowed to reevaluate foreign aid commitments.

A senior EU official described Vance's appointment as a "disaster" for Ukraine and the EU, both of which are heavily invested in funding the war with Russia. The official told Politico that Vance's influence could lead to significant reductions in US aid to Ukraine and undermine efforts to support Kiev.

Vance's economic protectionism also poses a challenge to Europe. Known for his advocacy of American manufacturing and support for tariffs on imports, Vance's policies could strain the transatlantic trade relationship. During a recent interview, Vance stressed the need for the US to focus on domestic production capabilities rather than prolonged foreign engagements, a stance that resonates with Trump's "America First" policy.

In February, at the Munich Security Conference, Vance skipped a key meeting with Ukrainian leaders, stating he did not expect to gain new insights from the discussion.

Vance's protectionist views extend to criticism of European countries, particularly Germany, for not meeting NATO defense spending targets, arguing that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own defense.

In announcing his selection of Vance, Trump praised his running mate's commitment to American workers and his successful business background. "JD has had a very successful career in Technology and Finance," Trump said, "and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond."
Vance has signaled a more aggressive approach to tariffs and trade policies, which could further complicate the EU's efforts to maintain stable economic relations with the US.
World gears up for potential Trump victory

With more than six months before the next US president takes office, NATO and its allies are implementing a multifaceted strategy to ensure a continuation of the Ukraine war, and maintain a unified alliance.

For instance, NATO has laid out a comprehensive plan to ensure sustained military support for Ukraine. The purpose of doing so is to avoid potential interference of a future Trump administration, as per a Politico report.

Likewise, in Ankara, Turkish officials are reviewing the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 policy roadmap to glean insights into Trump's prospective policies, especially regarding Syria.

In the US, including in States such as Atlanta to Austin and Lincoln, Nebraska, senior ministers from Germany and Canada have engaged with Republican governors, in the aim of bolstering ties with conservative factions.

In Washington, the anticipated return of Trump is the primary focus of monthly breakfast gatherings attended by ambassadors from European nations. During one such meeting, a senior diplomat from one country queried his peers about the prudence of their current course of action.

Lavrov backs Vance's stance

After US Republicans announced J.D. Vance as Republican vice presidential candidate, and given his stance on Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, on Wednesday, that Moscow is prepared to work with any US president willing to engage in "equitable, mutually respectful dialogue."

Lavrov was in New York to preside over two United Nations Security Council meetings during Russia's presidency of the council in July.

Regarding Vance, Lavrov said the Republican VP candidate is "in favor of peace, he's in favor of ending the assistance that's being provided and we can only welcome that because that's what we need - to stop pumping Ukraine full of weapons and then the war will end."
In that context, Lavrov stated that Russia is prepared to work with any American leader chosen by the US people, provided the leader is willing to engage in fair and mutually respectful dialogue.

"Under Trump there were more and more sanctions that were imposed, economic sanctions, diplomatic sanctions were imposed, however, at that time ... dialogue was underway between us and Washington at the highest levels," Lavrov said adding that "Right now there is no such dialogue."

Russia denies interference in US elections

An assessment released this month by the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence indicated that Russia "remains the primary threat to our elections." It also mentioned that unidentified "Russian influence actors" are covertly planning to "sway public opinion" in swing states and "reduce U.S. support for Ukraine."

"We do not interfere in other states' domestic affairs. This includes the United States," Lavrov said.
'Israel' must end war on Gaza

Though he condemned Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, the Russian foreign minister argued that the need to "end violence" in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank is essential as the death toll has become "horrifying".

Lavrov said, "What is now happening in Gaza is unacceptable collective punishment of the civilian population," adding that "The military clearance of the Gaza Strip, the most densely populated place on the planet, which for years has been called an open-air prison, has been underway for nearly 300 days. The large-scale military operation, which Israel has conducted together with its American ally, has resulted in horrifying statistics in terms of casualties and destruction."

According to the foreign minister, after almost 10 months, the death toll is now nearly 40,000 and the toll of injured, about 90,000 Palestinians, alongside the massive scale of destruction, is "twice as many as the number of civilian casualties on both sides over the ten years of the conflict in southeastern Ukraine.”

Lavrov urged:

"Dear colleagues, ending the violence in Gaza and the West Bank can create conditions not only for finding a lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but also for tackling other crisis hotspots throughout the vast expanse of the near and the Middle East in accordance with Security Council resolutions, rather than certain geopolitical ambitions or rules that the West attempts to use to replace the UN Charter."
Lavrov blamed the US' failed policy for the "unprecedented explosion of violence" in the region, accusing Washington of being a "direct participant in the conflict," just as it is in Ukraine.

According to Lavrov, "If this support stops, the bloodshed will be stopped."

Further, he called "Israel's" genocide in Gaza a form of "collective punishment."

"When it comes to collective punishment in violation of international humanitarian law, one cannot fight against one form of violation through other violations. It's the same principle here," he stated.

Meanwhile, Lavrov relayed that the Lebanese Resistance, Hezbollah, "has been very much restrained in its actions," but that the occupation is trying "to provoke them into a full-blown engagement."

"Neither Hezbollah, nor the government of Lebanon, nor Iran want a full-blown war," he explained, adding, "and as a suspicion that some circles in Israel are trying to achieve just that, to provoke a full-blown war, trying to engage the US, trying to make the mind."

He believed "it's terrible if some groups are trying to prioritize their personal interest rather than the interests of their own nation," noting that Russia was "doing everything possible to calm tensions."

We support Palestine's membership in the Security Council

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the session rejected the collective punishment taking place in Gaza, stressing that "Gaza is in ruins."

The foreign minister announced that Russia is supportive of Palestinian UN membership and expressed Russia's support for a ceasefire, calling for safe and adequate humanitarian access.

He emphasized the need for all foreign stakeholders to put their geopolitical objectives aside and end the decades-long persecution of Palestinians.

Zelensky requests long-range missiles

In a rare meeting, Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky addresses the UK parliament and requests permission to strike deep into Russian territory with long-range weapons

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United Kingdom cabinet on Friday, a move that demonstrates newly-elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer and London's support for Ukraine, as Zelensky asked Western allies for additional leeway on long-range capabilities.

Following a forum of European leaders at Blenheim Palace, Starmer continued his effort to elevate Britain's role in global affairs by inviting Zelensky to speak to his top ministers. According to Starmer's office, the last foreign leader to address the cabinet was US President Bill Clinton in 1997.

Reportedly, Zelensky reiterated a call for Western allies to allow long-range strikes deep into Russian territories and asked the UK to influence its allies to adjust their policy on the matter.

"Right now we are missing the main answer to this question and that is our long-range capability. Please convince the other partners to remove the limits," Zelensky pleaded at the meeting in Downing Street.

Moreover, Starmer assured Zelensky that his country would expedite the delivery of crucial aid to Ukraine. This follows the defense minister's statement earlier this month that the aid pledged by the previous Conservative government would be delivered within 100 days.

"Ukraine is, and always will be, at the heart of this government's agenda and so it is only fitting that President Zelenskiy will make a historic address to my cabinet," the prime minister said in a statement shortly before the meeting was convened.

Labour's support lies with Ukraine

Since taking office, Starmer reaffirmed the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine amid its war with Russia.

On Thursday, he announced that Britain would implement a new strategy to hinder Russia's attempts to bypass shipping sanctions. Additionally, Britain imposed sanctions on 11 vessels used for transporting Russian oil.

The new measures target Russia's "shadow fleet" by planning to share data on the network of often older tankers used for shipping Russian oil, enabling identification and action against individual vessels.

He also introduced the Defence Export Support Treaty, set to be signed by defense ministers, which will allow Ukraine to access £3.5 billion ($4.5 billion) in export finance to strengthen both countries' defense industries and increase production.

Last week at a NATO meeting, Starmer reaffirmed a commitment made by his predecessor, Conservative Rishi Sunak, to provide £3 billion annually in military support to Ukraine until 2030-31 and potentially beyond if necessary.

Labour decision allowing Kiev to hit Russia

The new UK Labour government will not reverse the decisions of its Conservative predecessor regarding allowing Kiev to strike targets on Russian territory with weapons provided by London, the Financial Times reported last week.

In June, the United States and some other countries, including the UK under Rishi Sunak's premiership, allowed Kiev to use Western-donated weapons to strike inside Russian territory.

The newspaper mentioned that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer signaled that the UK arms must be used in accordance with international humanitarian law for defense, but it will be up to Kiev to decide how to use the ammunition.

"Today and tomorrow and the next day is all about standing together with our allies, discussing practically how we provide further support for Ukraine," Starmer told reporters before he headed to Washington to attend NATO's 75th-anniversary summit.

Ukraine prepared to hold peace

Russia has repeatedly stated that it is open to peace talks with Ukraine, but only if Kiev revokes its desire to become a NATO member, as well as withdraw its troops from its former territories

Ukraine is prepared to hold peace talks with Russia to end their two-year war, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmyto Kuleba told his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on his first visit to China since the outbreak of the conflict.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning provided reporters with a summarized account of the discussed topics between the ministers on Wednesday, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“Ukraine is ready and willing to engage in dialogue and negotiations with Russia," Kuleba said, as quoted by Mao.

“Of course, the negotiations should be rational and substantive, aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace,” he added.

Mao quoted Wang who warned of the conflicts' "risk of escalation and spillover", affirming China's stance that "the resolution of all conflicts must eventually return to the negotiation table." He highlighted that "recently, both Ukraine and Russia have sent signals of willingness to negotiate to varying degrees."

Zelensky's change of heart

Ukraine's top diplomat's visit to China follows Ukrainian EX President Vladimir Zelensky's statement earlier this week of wanting to end the war "as soon as possible," highlighting his readiness to communicate with Moscow.

This contradicts his presidential decree signed in 2022 that barred talks with the leadership of Russia, which was implemented following the decision of four former Ukrainian regions to join the Russian side.

Since then, Zelensky has been campaigning for his "peace formula," which calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from territories claimed by Kiev. Russia, in response, dismissed the proposal, deeming it unrealistic.

A "peace summit" hosted in Switzerland back in June aimed to address Zelensky's "peace formula." However, Russia was not invited, while China boycotted the summit, arguing that Moscow should be part of the process
Kuleba's willingness to engage with Russia coincides with Ukrainian troops having been gradually pushed back by Russian forces in Donbass and other areas.
Putin sets conditions for Ukraine peace talks

In a statement delivered on June 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia is prepared to initiate negotiations with Ukraine under specific conditions.

Putin outlined the conditions for the proposed peace plan, stating that Ukrainian forces must withdraw entirely from the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, as well as from the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

He specified that the withdrawal should cover the entire territory of these regions within their original administrative borders before they became part of Ukraine. Once Kiev agrees to these terms and begins withdrawing troops while also formally renouncing NATO membership plans, Russia will immediately cease fire and commence negotiations.

"Our fundamental position is as follows: a neutral, non-aligned, non-nuclear status for Ukraine, along with its demilitarization and de-Nazification. These parameters were broadly agreed upon during the Istanbul negotiations in 2022," Putin said
The president emphasized that Russia is prepared to enter negotiations with Ukraine as soon as possible, acknowledging the complexities involved, "We are ready to sit at the negotiation table tomorrow, fully aware of the unique legal circumstances. Despite these, there are legitimate authorities, even according to their constitution, with whom we can negotiate."

Growing demands for peace

Kiev regime criminalizes 7 million Ukrainian men refusing to join the war

Dmitri Kovalevich is the special correspondent in Ukraine for Al Mayadeen English. In this report, he examines the political and military situation in the country.

In the second half of July, the Ukrainian authorities have been preoccupied with the upheavals surrounding the forthcoming presidential election in the United States. Ukraine is today completely dependent on the United States, financially, politically and economically. And so the outcome of this foreign election on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean directly affects the political prospects of Ukrainian politicians.

Ukraine's wealthy elites willingly and enthusiastically engaged in the NATO proxy war against Russia because they were enriching themselves in the process. However, the war's continuation requires more weapons and funding from the U.S. and European governments and more loans from predatory financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund.

The assassination attempt against Donald Trump on July 13 now increases his chances of being elected, according to many reports in U.S. media. This prompted former Ukraine president Petro Poroshenko to quickly announce he would travel to and attend the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from July 15 to 18 where Trump was formally nominated. It was a be a gesture of respect and fidelity to the probable future master of the White House, but Poroshenko's best-laid plans went awry after the speaker of the Ukrainian legislature barred him from traveling out of Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky and his entourage in Kiev are now extremely wary of any Ukrainian politician, other than those in their tight circle, who might 'catch some love' from Washington. This is all the more the case after Zelensky's regime has in recent months placed all its bets on the Democratic Party candidate in November, going so far in June as to call Trump a 'loser president's should he fail to maintain the war commitments of the Joe Biden-led White House since February 2022. The regime is finding it difficult to navigate the treacherous waters of imperialist rule in Washington.

Former Ukrainian delegate to the national legislature ('Rada') and business titan Viktor Medvedchuk (elected to the Rada in 2019) wrote a letter to Trump one week ago in which he claimed a Ukrainian trace in the July 13 assassination attempt. According to Medvedchuk,

Trump's vague statements that he would 'bring peace to Ukraine' would mean the loss of power to the neo-Nazi regime of Zelensky and its American handlers in the Biden administration if carried out. Medvedchuk was arrested in Ukraine in 2022 and was then freed as part of a prisoner exchange with Russia.

Growing number of Ukrainians speak out against war

The widely-read Ukraine news outlet Strana.ua began a news report on July 11 with: "The latest, massive missile strike on Ukraine on July 8 revealed a new trend in public sentiment. If previously after such attacks, Ukrainian social networks almost unanimously demanded revenge on Russia and to continue the war until victory, now the reaction is different.

Of course, calls for war to the bitter end are still heard, and there are many of them. But there are also many calls now emerging for Ukraine authorities to quickly negotiate peace. These include popular bloggers, some with million-strong audiences who have rarely written about political topics before."

As of mid-July, a number of widely-read bloggers on social networks in Ukraine have begun to advocate an early cessation of hostilities. Several legislators in the Rada are voicing their support. The popular Instagram blogger Vladyslava Rogovenko posted a typical comment on July 8:

"I am shocked by the daily news. Let the clown [Zelensky] go and negotiate peace. Enough of innocent deaths and this horror! How long will this continue? My anger has no limit!"she wrote on July 8
Blogger Oleksandr Voloshyn has written that Ukraine "is not surviving this war well" and says, "We should be smarter and more cunning" in planning to continue the war. For her part, blogger Mila Barayeva wrote to her 232,000 followers that she does not care how the war will stop as long as it stops.

Yulia Verbinets, the widely-read blogger 'Yerba' in Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, accuses the Ukrainian authorities of 'robbery'. "The world sees and does nothing. Our country is being robbed by our own authorities. Children and people are dying. Families and lives are destroyed."
Following Verba's comment, her colleagues also began to speak out against the war, including the widely read blogger from Dnipro city (the third largest in Ukraine), Anna Alkhim. She wrote on Telegram on July 11, "The betrayal continues! Your 'We will not forgive, we will win!' is all so bad!" She continued, "We will win, when? When you have already made lots of money, when nothing will be left of the country? When there will be no people, children, or military left? Is this what you mean when you say you 'will not forgive or forget'?"

Popular bloggers such as the above have until now confined themselves to writing about topics of fashion and style. Ukrainian TV presenter Max Nazarov explained on Telegram on July 10 that successful bloggers in Ukraine, some with millions of followers (including those cited above), typically write and say what their subscribers want to hear from them. And indeed, there is a rising chorus in Ukrainian society demanding peace and negotiations.

Some of these bloggers are being summoned for questioning by the SBU (Ukraine's secret police service), and criminal cases are being opened against them. In Ukraine, talking in favor of peace or even a ceasefire inevitably raises the issues of territory and who controls it, and even talk of such matters is equated to treason.

Concerns are being voiced by others, too

In response to the rising chorus of bloggers, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, has begun to threaten extrajudicial reprisals. "Hysteria about ending the war on Putin's terms will lead to the elimination of those who are promoting such ideas in Ukraine today," Yermak wrote on Telegram on July 9.

Ukrainian political analyst Kost Bondarenko believes that the presidential office is signaling a go-ahead for attacks against critical bloggers. Writing on Telegram on July 10, he said "The Office of the President has given the command through its 'experts' and other information sources working for the Office to harass those who even hint at the need to negotiate with Russia." He, too, emphasizes that the critical bloggers only voice what the majority of Ukrainians want to hear.

He continued, "Read the brilliant Carl von Clausewitz. Two hundred years ago, he wrote everything we need to know today, explaining when an end to war should be sought. The first consideration is when the price of victory is too high and when it costs too many human casualties. The second is that when conducting wars, a political goal should prevail, the value of which is determined by the size of those sacrifices which we are ready to accept in order to achieve victory.

When the expenditure of forces exceeds the value of the political goals being sought, then military conflict must be abandoned… Peace is not only a means but also a goal of politics…and of war."

A peculiar and emerging 'peace party' is now supported by Aleksei Arestovich, an advisor to the Office of the President from December 2020 to January 2023. He wrote on Telegram on July 8, "A 'war until victory' means hundreds more deaths, and your ‘world’ [the 'civilized world' as Ukrainian authorities call it] will not do anything about it. And we cannot do anything - there are no funds and not enough organization. Our only chance is to stop the war and reset the state and society."

Similar sentiments are present in the Ukrainian Armed Forces as well, as reported in the Ukrainian journal Politika.net on July 9, citing Artem Ilyin, a Kiev journalist recently conscripted into the ranks of the AFU and who now writes on social media. "Kievan Artem Ilyin previously worked in economic and business media and says he is shocked by the mood and worldview of his armed forces colleagues he is encountering. He writes that he is mainly surrounded by residents of rural regions in the west of Ukraine similar to himself, and says the lack of patriotism is immediately noticeable."

Ilyin is cited, "A fairly large part of the people are openly stating, 'For my 30-40-50 years, the state has given me nothing but a Kalashnikov assault rifle. Why should I be a patriot?' " He emphasizes that scaremongering about a Russian threat is no longer working on soldiers, saying that most of those he encounters accuse Ukrainian authorities of corruption and do not want to fight for them.

Ukrainian political scientist Ruslan Bortnik believes that such sentiments have been present in Ukrainian society, but only now are they breaking through into the public sphere as war fatigue in society grows. In his opinion, it will not be possible to suppress such sentiments by force.

Another Ukrainian political scientist Andriy Zolotarev concurs. "A significant part of society is tired of war and ready to accept any version of peace. Some bloggers feel this and want to voice this sentiment," Zolotarev said.

The criminalization of millions of Ukrainians

Since July 16, millions of Ukrainian citizens have been automatically turned into violators and criminals; this is according to the revised law on conscription which came into force on May 18, setting a July 16 deadline for all conscription evaders to come forward and register for military service.

In the two months since the officials responsible for military conscription are having to scramble to update their data in military enlistment offices. Registrants are sent immediately to a medical examination, and 99 percent of those are being declared fit for service. Those eligible are shipped off to the front.

Millions of Ukrainians, of course, knew of the change in the law requiring them to step forward and register, but they had no desire to fight so they ignored the law. However, they face perilous consequences. From now on, they can be fined an indefinite number of times from 17,000 to 22,500 hryvnia (US$ 420-$600 equivalent) for failure to register. There are separate fines for failure to update existing registration data, failure to present a military registration card when accosted and demanded by conscription officials, and failure to show up for the required medical examination.

In case of non-payment of fines, Ukrainians can now be deprived of their property, including their house and home, and thus be thrown out into the street. This applies to all persons liable for military duty whom Ukraine considers to be its citizens, even if they took another citizenship 20 years ago or are today no longer living in the country.

It even applies to residents of the two Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, who have voted several times during the past ten years to join the Russian Federation, and to residents of Crimea, who voted definitively in March 2014 to secede from coup Ukraine and join the Russian Federation. It applies to the residents of what is called the 'new territories' of the Russian Federation, that is, in the former Ukrainian provinces (oblasts) of Kherson and Zaporozhye (' Zaporizhzhia') that lie south and east of the Dnieper River
The representative of the military enlistment office in Poltava province in central Ukraine, Roman Istomin, has said that starting from July 16, there will be even more military patrols and police on the streets of Ukrainian cities, seeking out yet more cannon fodder for the front lines (or to take the bribes paid by evaders).

According to Ukraine legislator Oleh Sinutka, some six to seven million Ukrainians will refuse to update their data. Authorities will try to levy large fines against each of them, and in case of non-payment, the authorities will seize property. According to such minds, the fines collected and the properties seized will assist in paying Western creditors for the massive and rising debts owed to international governments and financial institutions. However, many Ukrainians were deeply angered in July by the news that all employees of Western-financed NGOs have received exemptions from serving in the AFU. All employees of 133 such organizations are deemed "critical for the economy".

Such employees and services have suddenly become "critically important" for Ukraine, while only half of the employees working in railroads, power plants, and military production enterprises are formally exempted. What's more, the '50%' exemptions are not actually adhered to by the military enlistment officers. They grab anyone suitable by age or gender.

Simply put, the so-called leadership academies in Ukraine are being funded by the West (including NGOs) and are training and employing students (invariably pro-Western in their views) are far more important to Ukraine than the workers and professionals who are trained to operate nuclear power plants, transportation services, a host of other public services. After all, forcibly conscripted Ukrainian peasants can march to the front lines without a railroad if needed, but without centers devoted to 'nurturing democracy', the very essence of post-2014 Ukraine as an anti-Russia bulwark may be threatened.

Even wealthy representatives of Ukrainian businesses are often forced to lie and look for illegal loopholes to buy off conscription or flee abroad. Meanwhile, an entire segment of society consisting of several thousands of people is being exempted from conscription in advance. These are people who effectively work for the U.S. and UK governments and for the European Union. They have no need to try and escape the country, bribe officials or forge identity documents.

Thus, a hierarchical pyramid of Ukrainian society has emerged. At the top are the untouchable employees whose salaries are paid by Western funding. Alongside them in evading military service are government leaders and officials, the wealthy class of businessmen. Meanwhile, at the very bottom sit the residents of Ukrainian villages that have been devastated by the work of conscription officers and by the deaths and injuries at the front that have followed.

A legislator from Zelensky's party/machine, Maxim Buzhansky, commenting on the military reservation system and obligations, writes that a new caste is emerging in Ukrainian society, a new kind of nobility, which no one has chosen in elections. "They don't pay taxes, they don't fight, but they basically rule.

Let's be honest, the old nobility could not dream of such a thing," Buzhansky writes. He also reminds his readers that all such people have never worked, in principle; they have spent their time at conferences here and there in the West, talking about 'reforms' and 'changes' that are underway or anticipated. The fact that full immunity from military service has been granted to employees of Western grant organizations shows who are the true masters of Ukraine.

Ukrainian military analysts are discussing these days the location of the next likely breakthrough by the Russian Armed Forces, which advance inexorably every day. An officer of the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade of the AFU, Sergey Tsekhotsky, drew attention on Telegram on July 10 to the region around the town of Pokrovsk, some 50 km northwest of Donetsk city. He wrote on Telegram on July 10: "Kurakhovo, Selidovo, Pokrovsk–these are perhaps the main settlements the Russians are trying to reach. The enemy is using everything it has at its disposal, and their assaults are ongoing along the entire front line, simultaneously and continuously."

Ukrainian political analyst Andriy Zolotarev believes that an advance by Russia is looming in the direction of Zaporozhye, the fifth-largest city in Ukraine. "The military says we can expect an advance in the Zaporozhye direction. The question is whether the AFU will hold the situation. Given what we have seen in recent months, it is not good when there is a conflict between Ukraine’s military and political leadership and there is the need or desire to make someone a scapegoat."

Military expert Kostyantyn Mashovets reports that a crisis is also brewing in the direction of Kupyansk (pre-war population 28,000), which lies app. 70km southeast of Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine.

Ukrainian analyst Ruslan Bortnyk admits that neither a new U.S. aid package nor a new wave of conscription will make it possible to stop the Russian offensive westward from Donbass. In his opinion, Russia is preparing an attack on the Dnipropetrovsk region (renamed 'Dnipro' by Kiev following the 2014 coup), which will be a serious image blow to the Ukrainian authorities. Dnipro is the third largest city in Ukraine.

Ukrainian military officer Konstantin Proshinsky complains about the quality of soldiers who are being forcibly conscripted throughout Ukraine. He estimates that 90% of them are not fit to participate in military action. "Let’s look at persons who were forcibly stuffed into a military bus and brought to me. We can make a soldier out of only one out of ten such persons. Nine of ten will refuse orders, seek surrender, look for a medical exemption, or just hide away for a long time." According to him, such "conscription" results are burdens, adding to the AFU's problems.

A 'peace plan' by Hungary's prime minister draws condemnations

Also in July, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban spoke of Zelensky's plan for continued war as he, Orban, sees it. The 'plan' amounts to dubious claims that Russia will soon be obliged to launch mass conscription, and this, in turn, will allegedly cause protests in Russian society and lead to an overthrow of the Russian government.

"As for the outcome of the war, the Ukrainian president is confident that the Russian armed forces will be forced to resort to a general conscription in the middle of next year, which will lead to internal destabilization in Russia," Orban opined.

"Kiev's main bet is not on the military defeat of Russia, but on internal upheaval within it," said an editorial commentary in Strana.ua on July 17. But that idea appears completely unrealistic. In Ukraine, tougher conscription rules and regulations have been going on for two years, accompanied by kidnappings and beatings of conscripts, but so far this cannot be said to have destabilized the Ukrainian regime. What's more, the Russian Federation has much more human resources and much more financial incentives for volunteers compared to Ukraine.

Prior to the Russian Special Military Operation launched in February 2022, Ukraine had refused for eight long years to implement the 'Minsk 2' agreement of February 2015 and the 'Minsk 1' peace agreement reached five months earlier. These agreements envisioned the reintegration of Donbass into Ukraine but with a new, semi-autonomous status.

The refusals by Ukraine to implement those agreements were supposed to stoke tensions in Russia, cause a continued flow of war refugees there from Donbass, and cause political instability. This 'plan' has never changed. It amounts to the following: Ukrainian soldiers are still dying in order that greedy Western companies may eventually gain by force direct access to Russian natural resources and the Russian government and people may eventually be divided and weakened. This is the dream world still prevalent in the minds of those who rule in Kiev.

Lavrov calls to end Gaza violence
    backs Vance's Ukraine stance
After US Republicans announced J.D. Vance as Republican vice presidential candidate, and given his stance on Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, on Wednesday, that Moscow is prepared to work with any US president willing to engage in "equitable, mutually respectful dialogue."

Lavrov was in New York to preside over two United Nations Security Council meetings during Russia's presidency of the council in July.

Moscow welcomes JD Vance's stance on Ukraine

"If this support stops, the bloodshed will stop."

800,000 Ukrainian men evade military

A recent update granted waivers to all employees of NGOs that receive foreign grants and are engaged in political activities

Approximately 800,000 Ukrainian men have gone into hiding to avoid military mobilization, according to Dmitry Natalukha, a senior MP in Kiev, as reported by the Financial Times. Natalukha stressed the necessity of creating economic-driven exemptions from the draft.

Earlier this year, Kiev introduced a strict new conscription system aimed at preventing draft evasion through the threat of severe punishment. However, this system has inadvertently disadvantaged legally operating businesses in Ukraine compared to those in the shadow economy, according to the Financial Times. Many draft evaders have changed their addresses and prefer to be paid in cash to stay off the radar.

"We are working at the limit," stated the HR director of a large steel mill, describing the workforce shortages his company faces. According to the FT, Ukrainian MPs are now planning to address this issue by overhauling the draft exemption system.

One proposal by Natalukha, chair of the Economic Development Committee, would allow businesses to exempt up to 50% of their employees from mobilization by paying a fixed fee of about $490 per month. Another competing bill would protect anyone earning over $890 per month, arguing that such individuals contribute more to the economy than they would on the battlefield.

Natalukha believes his proposal could prevent about 895,000 men from being conscripted and generate approximately $4.9 billion for Ukraine’s war effort. He has argued in Ukrainian media that his bill is fairer, as it avoids the perception that only the poor, who cannot afford to bribe their way out of the draft, are sent to fight. Ukrainians are estimated to spend between $700 million and $2 billion annually on fraudulent means to avoid mobilization.

Currently, the government decides which agencies and businesses are essential and grants them partial or full immunity from mobilization. For example, a recent update granted waivers to all employees of NGOs that receive foreign grants and are engaged in political activities.

Moscow maintains that the conflict as a US-driven proxy war, with Ukrainians being forced to fight by their Western-dependent government.

Ukrainian drone attack seriously
    damaged Zaporozhye NPP
The Ukrainian attack on the Zaporzhye Nuclear Power Plant severely damaged the facility, though the local authorities managed to extinguish the fire

A recent attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces has sparked a serious fire and caused significant damage to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) plant, spokesperson Yevgeniya Yashina said on Sunday.

The incident breached the plant's physical integrity, marking a first in the history of the facility and threatening the foundational principles of nuclear safety as outlined by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the spokesperson added.

The attack, which took place late on August 11, involved Ukrainian kamikaze drones targeting one of the two cooling towers at the ZNPP. The resulting strikes caused a fire, severely damaging the tower's internal structures.

Emergency response teams worked diligently to contain the fire, which was extinguished by 11:30 PM local time, according to the Russian state corporation Rosatom.

Yashina emphasized the gravity of the situation, describing the attack as a deliberate attempt to disable the station. "This is an unprecedented threat to nuclear safety, as the nuclear power plant has suffered such serious damage for the first time," she stated. She also underlined that the IAEA's basic principles had been breached due to the damage to the plant's infrastructure.

Today's strike was carried out on NPP equipment critical for cooling water during normal plant operations. This can only be described as an act of nuclear terrorism by the Ukrainian authorities
Despite the significant damage to the cooling tower, the ZNPP's press service reported that the operation of the plant was not affected, and no casualties were recorded. The fire was localized, and no further threat of burning was present. The IAEA experts, who witnessed the aftermath of the strike, observed strong smoke emanating from the northern area of the plant after several explosions erupted.

The governor of Russia's Zaporozhye region, Yevgeny Balitsky, initially reported the fire at the ZNPP's cooling system facility, assuring there was no immediate threat to the plant.

Not the first nuclear rodeo

Although this is the first time that Ukraine has attacked the ZNPP's infrastructure, it is not the first time they have attacked its premises. Back in April, Ukrainian kamikaze drones targeted the ZNPP premises following an IAEA inspection of the facility.

According to a statement, the drone strike was "recorded in the canteen sector located on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. A truck unloading food was damaged...Another strike was recorded in the cargo port."

Rosatom urged the IAEA chief, Director General Rafael Grossi, and European Union leaders to "immediately respond to a direct threat to the safety of the Zaporizhzhia NPP and categorically condemn the attempt to escalate the situation around Europe's largest nuclear power plant."
