Since my grandfather passed away I have no on to speak kurdish with and that's where this forum gets in to to the picture by supplying me with some kurdish reading, I'm also really interested in kurdish culture and kurdish (middle eastern) linguistics.

I'm sorry if I was unclear, my dad is Armenian and my mom is Syriac/Aramean. So nope I'm not kurdish.

Actually I couldn't speak Kurdish until I was 18 years old, then I decided to learn it. Mostly because I found it ridiculous that I couldn't speak with my paternal grandfather as he only knew kurdish.

It should be said that I had some experience with Kurdish prior to making the decision so there where stuff I could comprehend.

Anyway I started to visit him more often and I also started to study Kurdish online. This was how I honed my comprehensive skills but orally I wasn't doing so good, then I made the decision to spend 2 months in Mardin. Not only did I learn to speak much better, it was also the best trip I've made ever.

It should also be said that my Kurmanci is far far from perfect as I use lots of Arabic loanwords and my rather thick Scandinavian accent is easily detectable. But I'm getting there eventually, and I hope that in 3-4 years time I'll be fluent.

Another great way of learning is to listen to music which I did a lot.

I'm also trying to learn Arabic and Italian, but that's not priority.

Yeah watching TV also is a great way of learning. You guys have no idea how difficult it was the first time I listened to the Kurdish news show on Roj TV. I thought it was another language, even my grandfather who could only speak kurdish also had difficulties understanding as his Kurmanci is very different from the "official" language people are learning now.

No my grandfather was Armenian but his father made the decision not to pass on the Armenian language to him because in the area they where, speaking or even being Armenian was dangerous so they actually changed their ethnicity by bribing an government official. They changed it from Ermeni to Suryani.

My grandfather was originally from the Botan Region but our ancestors true place of origin is Elazig (Turkish), Xarpet (Kurmanci) or as we say it in Western-Armenian Xarbert/Kharpert which means "Rocky Fortress".

I have absolutely nothing against any Kurds and hope that they'll succeed as soon as possible to attain an independent country of their own. I don't mean "independence" like in bashur, I'm talking about real Independence. And I'm sure that Armenia and Kurdistan would become great friends.

Can't say that I've planned it but it would be really cool to go there and I do have some Armenian relatives in Zaxo.

THATS RIGHT KURDISTAN IS BEUTIFUL. I KNOW KURDISTAN ONLY FROM PISC (BUT I AM GOING THERE IN MARCH) AND I KNOW SOUTH THE BEST AND I REALLY LIKE IT. ITS GREAT - BOTH CITIES AND NATURE.

KAK TORI - YOUR POINT OF VIEW OF INDEPENDENCE IS ABSOLUTLY RIGHT AND I AM GLAD THAT YOU THINK LIKE THAT ABOUT KURDISTAN. HOPEFULLY YOUR COUNTRY WILL BE FULL INDEPENDENT, PEACUFULL AND PROSPEROUS AS WELL.
