Erbil, Oct. 4 (AKnews) - Only two weeks after the last Kurdish-Italian business conference, the Italians are back in town for a new round of talks.
Since yesterday, Italian and Kurdish businessmen are attending a conference, as always, in Erbil's Rotana Hotel
Again, Sinan Chalabi, minister for commerce and industry in the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG), and Jamil Suleiman, KRG's minister for agriculture and water resources, met with representatives of 55 companies. This time, Italy's Economic Development Minister, Paolo Romani, was also present.
It was no surprise that the participants promised to boost bilateral economic relations, as it was announced by Fathi Mohammed, advisor at the Kurdish Commerce and Industry Ministry. Also, the participants vowed again to attract more Italian companies to Kurdistan and to offer them opportunities in the region.
Observers are confused, why Italian and Kurdish businessmen have to meet that often to "strengthen relations" and to promise more investment. Last month, both sides even signed two memoranda of understanding on that issue at the alleged first economic conference. Back then, everything that had been done seemed to be enough.
"We hope that now more Italian companies come and do business in the Kurdistan region, because this region offers many opportunities for foreign investors," said Sinan Chalabi in September.
And Antonio Pawetti, deputy head of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, had been confident that the agreements would increase the trade exchange volume between Italy and Kurdistan and Iraq.
"Italy already has the biggest trade volume of all European countries with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq," Mr Pawetti claimed. "We also like to assist Iraq and the Kurdistan region in the areas of agriculture and health."
It seems, as if Kurds and Italians like these announcements, even if concrete deals are missing or never made public. When the conference in September was announced, promises were made that Italian businessmen want to open branches in the Kurdistan Region. "The Italians want to open branches in the Kurdistan Region," Dara Jalil Khayat, head of Kurdistan Region’s Commerce Chamber, had said. During or after the conference, there were no announcements of concrete deals that were made.
After all these Kurdish-Italian economic conferences, even the officials seem to be confused. Khayat claimed that the conference in September was the first of its kind between Kurdistan and Italy. However, Khayat had already announced a very similar "Kurdish-Italian Trade Conference" in Erbil in early June.
