I enjoy all types of vegetables, though I often wonder what they would taste like covered in chocolate :D

How chili and ginger cut cancer risk: Combination of spices 'obstruct tumor-nourishing receptor'

Previous studies found chili peppers contain tumor-nourishing compound
American Chemical Society found it combines with ginger to fight cancer
Together, ginger and chili bind to a key tumor-nourishing receptor

Many of us love the hot kick of a curry searing with chili peppers and ginger.

Some can't stand the burn.

But spice-phobes should consider a change of heart - since new research shows these two ingredients combine to create a compound that fights cancer.

The finding, from the American Chemical Society, builds on previous studies that suggested a property in chili peppers (capsaicin) fuels tumor growth.

However, according to the new research, capsaicin can be turned into a cancer-fighting property when combined with ginger's pungent compound 6-gingergol.

Ginger has long been touted as a health food, recommended to patients for everything from a cold to a severe disease as it stimulates anti-inflammatory cells.

And this study found that when 6-gingergol binds to capsaicin it forms a super-strong compound that inhinits key tumor-growing receptors.

Over several weeks, the ACS researchers fed mice prone to lung cancer either capsaicin or 6-gingerol alone, or a combination of both.

During the study period, all of the mice that received only capsaicin developed lung carcinomas while only half of the mice fed 6-gingerol did.

Surprisingly, an even lower percentage - only 20 per cent - of the mice given both compounds developed cancer.

The researchers also dug into the potential molecular underpinnings of how the compounds interact to lead to this effect.

Lead authors Jiahuan Li, Gangjun Du and colleagues wanted to further investigate this apparent contradiction.

I do NOT think there should be any testing of live animals X(

Suggest they capture jihadists and test chemicals on them :ymparty:

Not at all - they are normally just shot

If they are used in experiments:

a) they get to life a bit longer
b) it is more likely to discourage others from joining ISIS if they do not have the quick death and swift journey to their 72 virgins
c) all medicines, chemicals have to be tested on humans before going on sale to the general public

Testing on defenceless animals is probably the worst thing humans could do X(

Very interesting interview of Lierre Keith about her book The Vegetarian Myth, where we learn that a vegetarian and of course a Vegan lost at least 5% of its brain size

The questions are in French but the answers in English and it is easy to get the point.

phpBB [video]

What she says about "agriculture is destroying" nature is true, I think. And a population of hunters is healthier than a farmers' it is easy to constate with archeological and anthropological studies.

Recently, it has been exposed and prove that the main guilty in our modern diseases is sugar and not fat which is good for us. Or, vegans are eating often more sugar than everyone else in addition to all other carbs.

Very interesting interview and as you so rightly say:

I would like to add that the questions are extremely brief and about 95% of the interview is in English :ymapplause:

Coming from a farming background and living next to a farm - I would question some of the facts

Farms do not totally destroy the land in order to plant crops and they change the fields round to allow them to rest and/or plant different crops or put sheep/cattle on them to keep the land healthy

Regular muck spreading returns many nutrients to the land (cough splutter choke)

They also allow for hedgerows and limited ground next to hedgerows for wildlife :D

One reason for over farming in UK is that each year a large portion of UK crops never reach the shops and have to be destroyed in the fields due to the fact

IT IS THE WRONG SHAPE

Customers want their vegetables to look a certain way and will not buy them if them are misshapen - ergo shops/supermarkets will not buy them from farms

Recently Morrisons have started to take misshapen vegetables for a special reduced price range :ymapplause:

Not certain of figures but US throws away about HALF of it's food produce

Americans buy too much food and throw away half of what they buy

Not sure how US farms work - if they use misshapen food or just throw it away

I will not eat red meat - I never have done - I never will do

I eat poultry and fish :D

I eat poultry and fish also in Duhok, quite never red meat because halal meat is useless : without blood so less iron.

What I miss the most is French "charcuterie" : sausages, ham, etc. :(

And cheeses also. European cheeses are 500% better than cheese in Middle East and with 1000% more varieties.

But vegetables and fruits in Kurdish bazar are really tasty : no regular shapes, different colors, various aspects, etc.
