PostAuthor: Feyli_kord » Thu Dec 20, 2007 9:50 pm

are lori's kurds or persians?. Persians on the E-net claim that loris are persians with a slight influence of kurdish culture and a diffrent dialect. While other kurds and my father says that the loris are feyli kurds from a diffrent clan. Whats your opinion? could you clarify?.

Well, just like the Zaza, there are Lors who consider themselves a separate identity than Kurdish...

Northern Lors generally consider themselves Kurdish - and at some point, one can speculate, that that was the general attitude within all Lor communities... But slowly - some developed a Lor identity - while others identified with Kurdish or Persian nationalism...

However: few consider themselves "Persian"... Most just call themselves "Iranian"... Thus avoiding the Kurd vs. Persian split...

Kurds = Soran + Kurmanj. Other languages are only in realtion with Kurdish.

As I said, bira, there are three ways to turn for a Lor... Nationalism is still young and infant in some places - and Loristan is one of them... But they're own Lor nationalism is growing gradually...

Persians on internet? forget them! they claim every thing good or bad as Persian. :P

Historically Lors were regared a parts of Kurds. but with forging of Persian identity and creation of Iran in the beginning of 20th century coupled with weakness of Kurds in middle east, the Lors were cut of mainstream Kurdish population and today they consider themselves as a unique ethnic group of their own but acknowledge their kinship with their Kurdish kinsmen. There is a Lori proverb which says: '' Kurd u Lur Braran'' meaning Kurds and Lurs are brothers. This is also how many modern Kurds view Kurds: as kinsmen of Kurds. After their defeat by rezakhan mir panj the Lurs were generally silent on the political arena regarding their identity and history. today with the myths of American invasion and collapse of Iran there can be feeled some weak cultural activities by Lurs. It is clearly understood by all (Kurds, Balouchs etc..) the political results of joining of Lurs to other opresssed peoples in Iran!

Some info about Lurs origins:
As for origins of Lurs there is no generally accpeted theory. but probably one of these is correct:
1) Lurs are descendants of a mix of semitic (not necessarily Arabic) peoples and Kurds.
2) Lurs are descendants of prehistoric Lullubi tribes of Zagros.
3) Lurs are descendants of Elamites and there after Elymais kingdom of Luristan in early sassanid peroid.

Maybe there are other theories too but to my knowledge these three are among the best known theories.
But there is one thing clear and it is that Lurs are not Persians as if they were then there would be no reason for Lurs to deny it. I mean If Lurs were Persians they would simply refer to themselves as Persians not Lurs.

Which Lors do you mean? The Lori identiry as one unified ethnic group is not firmly established.

To my understanding there are three groups identified as Lurs.
1) Northern Lurs or Feili lurs.
2) Bakhtiari Lurs¨
3)Southern Lurs.

1)The first group inhabit mostly in the eastern part of Luristan province, and alongside with Laki Kurds in western part of Luristan province, formed what was historically known as lesser Lurs. The laki Kurds speak Kurdish but feili Kurds speak a mixed Kurdish-luri, however as is with Laki, the dialect of feili lurs is easily understand by Sorani Kurds, and are also regarded Kurds by other Kurds. many if not most of them identify themselves as :''Feili Kurds'', ''Shia Kurds'' or simply Kurds, the same as Laki Kurds identify themselves as southern Kurds.
2)Bakhtiaris, emphasise first on their bakhtiari identity than being Lurs. Their language is closer to Persian than to Kurdish, however, there are a lot of Kurdish lownwords left in Bakhtiari from the time of Kurdish dynasty of Hazaraspids who ruled Bakhtiaris and southern lurs.
3)Southern Lurs speak a dialect closer to northern lurs than to Bakhtiari. the area of southern lurs + Bakhtiari area is what was in past called Greater Lur (Hazaraspid kingdom).

To conclude, as Diri rightly pointed out, northern Luris are Kurds: speak a dialect generally very closer to Kurdish, than even is to Bakhtiari; notably, they communicate in farsi with Bakhtiaris, while can easily communicate with southern and even central Kurds. Their dance is similar to Kurdish. They enjoy Kurdish music. and so on all aspects of their culture except for their closing, are Kurdish.
